Mental Health and Wellbeing

"Mental health is a state of well-being in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community." (World Health Organisation)

Here at St Edward's, we aim to promote positive mental health and wellbeing for our whole school community through the PSHE curriculum, assemblies, school council and the school website. We understand how important mental health and emotional wellbeing is to our lives, in just the same way as physical health. We recognise that children’s mental health is a crucial factor in their overall wellbeing and can affect their learning and achievement.   We as a school pursue this aim using both universal, whole school approaches and specialised, targeted approaches aimed at vulnerable students.

At St Edward's we have a whole school approach when using the Zones of Regulation. Using the Zones in each class helps increase self awareness and social and emotional skills, a common language for communication, problem solving, and emotional understanding. The zones also help children identify how they are feeling in the moment, according to their emotions and level of alertness, as well as guide them to strategies to support regulation. Resulting in a healthier, more inclusive school climate.

We have various Mental Health and Wellbeing Display's around school

We have created a dedicated Mental Health display in school. This is a resource for the children, allowing them to access information should they experience feelings of sadness, worry, or anxiety.

Meet WEBSTER our Worry Monster

If our children have a worry that they would like help with, they can share their worries with. When they write their worries down and put them in his worry box, he will get an adult to help and support them with their worry. We believe it’s crucial for them to know that they are not alone and that support is available.
