At St Edward’s, Religious Education is taught as a rigorous academic subject, but it is also so much more than that. The whole life of our school is an expression of Catholic belief and tradition, helping children to grow in faith and put that faith into action in their daily lives.
From their earliest years, our children have been encouraged to live out our mission to love, serve and learn together. They take an active part in preparing and participating in Masses, assemblies and class collective worship, guided and inspired by the personal example of staff.
We are blessed to work closely with our parish and families in preparing children to receive the sacraments of First Forgiveness and Holy Communion. During the liturgical year, the whole school takes time to reflect deeply on key seasons and celebrations of our faith. In Advent and Christmas, we prepare joyfully for the coming of Christ. During Holy Week, we journey together through the events leading to the Resurrection, with special services that help the children to walk with Jesus. We also honour Mary by praying the Rosary and mark important feast days with prayer and celebration, giving the children rich opportunities to live out and deepen their faith.
Prayer and worship are at the heart of our daily rhythm. Each day begins and ends with prayer, with moments of prayer before and after lunch. Across the week, children take part in a rich variety of worship experiences, including hymn practice, assemblies, celebration assemblies and class-led prayer and liturgy. Class 1 and Class 2 also enjoys the special experience of taking home a Prayer Bear, which encourages children and families to pray together in the home.
The Catholic life of our school is made visible through the environment we share. Christian symbols are etched into the very fabric of our building — from the frosted windows at the front of school to the banners in our hall, the painted crosses in every classroom, and the prayer focus areas where children gather for reflection.
We are proud of our pupil leadership groups, who help us to live out our mission in practical and prayerful ways. The Little Apostles support prayer and liturgy across school and are learning to lead worship themselves. The Mini Vinnies meet each week to plan charitable projects and raise funds for local, national and global causes. In 2025, the whole school created its own pledge for the Jubilee of Hope, showing our commitment to building a fairer and more compassionate world together.
As a school, we regularly join our parish family at St Edward’s Church to celebrate Mass with Father Peter. These times of prayer and worship are an important part of our Catholic life and strengthen our connection with the wider faith community.
In all of this, the Catholic life of St Edward’s is woven into everything we do — in our curriculum, in our celebrations, and in the way we care for one another every day.
